In the case of the Herald I feel they went way beyond what was acceptable. Possibly in the case of RTE who immediately took the caller off the air, identified him as a prank caller and apologised straight away you might have a point. Given she lost her business and the strain the allegation must have put on her marriage I'm not sure I agree with you that an apology would have sufficed. Personally I feel if there was no political aspect to this case, that people would be a lot more sympathetic to Monica Leech. You don't feel sympathy for Monica Leech, your opinion fair enough. This is why she received two separate payouts, one from RTE and the large one from Independent newspapers. I remember reading the Herald at the time and thinking some of the articles were pretty nasty and bang out of order. But shortly after this, the Evening Herald did a series of newspapers articles that basically claimed she was having an affair with the minister in question in order to get the contract.
